About the farm:

This is a uniquely wild and beautiful place. You will love it but in winter bring wellies as the yard can be muddy  - also some warm clothes - it can be breezy up here! You are free to wander on the farm, hang out or enjoy it in your own way (or have a late lie-in!). It is isolation par excellence - from the farmhouse you see heather moors all around with streams and ancient oak woods down in the steep valleys which border the farm. You will find yourself amidst a wealth of untouched history - huge dry stone walls surround tiny fields, old vernacular buildings - real ‘Herriot’ country (actually Lidmoor is pictured as a double page background for the dedication 'To my grandchildren ...' in James Herriot’s Yorkshire).

Walking:

There are many lovely and fascinating walks from the farm.

For wildlife enthusiasts:

This is a favorite nesting area for curlews and lapwings. An occasional pair of buzzards visit, and more rarely hen harriers. Woodpeckers can often be heard in the ancient oak woods, which are also home to a wide range of flora and fauna including deer and badgers.  Foxes and stoats thrive on a large population of rabbits. There was a sighting of an otter on the farm in 2004.

Swimming:

For hot days there is a large pond which is good for swimming. Its a fantastic experience to swim up on the hill in the middle of nowhere. Hodge beck is a wonderful stream to explore and there are a few places deep enough to swim.

When civilisation calls:

There are many charming and interesting places within reach –  the old fishing harbour of Whitby, the maze of narrow streets at Robin Hood's Bay, the quaint Victorian resort of Scarborough and historic York (all about 1 hour drive). Also there are the National Trust properties of Rievaulx Abbey and Terraces, and Nunnington Hall. Castle Howard is about a half hour drive.

Dogs

As Lidmoor is a sheep farm we regret that we cannot have dogs to stay.

Slippers!

P.S. Please bring house slippers as we ask visitors not to use their outdoor shoes in the house for obvious farmyard reasons!!
